Class Chilopoda

centipedes

Biology

As their name suggests, Centipedes have one pair of legs on each of their segments, which can number up to 100. Measuring from 1 to 1.5 inches long, Centipedes vary in color and have a flattened body. Centipedes will eat insects and spiders and typically love outside under damp leaves, stones, etc. From time to time, Centipedes will enter homes where they take refuge in moist basements and closets, or in bathrooms. They are very fast and will run when disturbed. Centipedes can live as long as 5 to 6 years.

Factoid

Centipedes have a “fearful” appearance but cause no damage to the structure, household possessions or foods. Some can bite when handled carelessly, resulting in a slight swelling or pain no worse than a mild bee sting. (Factoid Source: Willian F. Lyon, Ohio State University)
